It is starting to look like a room

Last week was the end of week 4 and today is the beginning of week 5.  So far, they have installed the new windows in the back, framed the room, completed the electrical work, installed the heating system and sheet rock the room.

Michael & I had a busy weekend. We have been discussing our counter choices and realized that we were not sold on either the black leather or persia brown so off to the granite warehouse again.

When I saw the persia brown stone, I definitely didn't think it would work.  It was very busy and too brown.  I fell in love with the Calacatta White marble for the Island.  We are thinking of going with that for the Island, but still debating the up keep.

We went to M Texiera Soapstone gallery and loved the look and feel of soapstone.  I think we are going to go with a deep black light venata with gray veins from Brazil for the outer counter.  We are going to find out today if it is in the budget.

Other things we accomplished over the weekend - We found a vanity (well Michael found it) and sink for the 1/2 bath and gave our okay to purchase that.  Hmmmm, I think that is the only thing we accomplished.

Insulation of the room
Sheet Rock - This is the opening for the tv
The room is almost completed

I think they are going to finish up with the Sheet Rock this week and start the flooring.

When it rains,

it pours for us! What an insane weekend! I came home from the gym on Saturday morning and took a quick shower and was ready to go with Michael to check out soap stone for the outer cabinets, but of course that didn't happen.  Before heading out, we went into the kitchen to check out the progress and I noticed water coming down from the ceiling as a steady drip.  The only thing above the kitchen is the bathroom.

As luck would have it, the shower was leaking and we weren't sure where it was coming from. That completely ruined our day.

As Michael was writing an email to our contractor, I started straightening up the guest bedroom and noticed the water damage from the torrential rain we had a week ago and then noticed it on the ceiling as well.  Michael discovered that not only was the guest room damaged, but my dressing room and our tv room.

After all of this, there is no way we can get soap stone! We need to replace the four windows upstairs, fix the damage to the walls in each room and get the shower fixed. Oh Joy!!!

At least we were both able to get out of the house on Saturday and enjoy the beautiful day.

Our Living Space

Just in case you want to see how we have been coping with the mess in our house! We are basically camping! I call it the sophisticated version of camping because we still have access to a full bathroom and running water.

End of Week 2 update

Kevin's crew has been moving along nicely! They have gotten so much done in two weeks ~ pictures to be posted this weekend.

Last night we checked it out and the supporting beam between the dining room & kitchen was installed and the wall between the two rooms completely removed.

The plumbing for the sink, refrigerator, and 1/2 bath is complete. They did a meticulous job with the plumbing(this is according to Michael because I do not know much about plumbing) and they also readied the boiler for the installation of radiant heat. Again, not an expert on radiant heat, so can't comment anymore on that.

The next steps are cutting the brick facing the back for the installation of the windows providing it doesn't and having the eletrician come in to wire everything up.

Michael and his cousin David are going to install the speaker system in the living room this weekend and I just received a laundry list of things that we have to accomplish this weekend like pick grout color, decide on a tv, exchange light fixtures, go back to the Granite Stone yard and a few other items...No rest for the weary.

We are going to be ready for inspection by the end of next week and then they are going to be sheet-rocking & tiling in week 4...wow!!!

Overall, we are pumped how things are moving along and are trying our best to keep the process moving from our end! Have a great weekend everyone.

Construction Pics Day 2

we figured out the archway that was in the kitchen was not structural which is a blessing. It was a way to divide the kitchen with the breakfast nook. We are going to be gaining all that space.

we are going to be losing the two windows to the right of where I am standing and will lose the wall in front of me.

What a difference between day 1 and day 2. That is me standing in the dining room. That wall is coming down to create one great room with the kitchen.

Big Day!!!

I was a bit apprehensive to go home yesterday because I didn't know what to expect! Having gone through several major renovations with many, many issues, I wasn't sure if the house would be covered in dust, if the contractors didn't show up or if they just left the place in a complete mess.

To my surprise, I arrived home to a well sealed off work space. The door to the living room and the entry from the dining room to the living room were double sealed. They sealed from inside and then plastic and sealed from outside.

Michael and I went into the kitchen through the basement last night to check out the work that was done and they accomplished a lot for the first 8 hours. The cabinets are gone and the dishwasher. The stove was still there and the bathroom intact. I presume they will get rid of that stuff soon.

We are excited to see the progress. Pictures are coming.
